Herpes labialis

Start antivirals early if they have a prescription plan. Topical Melissa has some human herpes-labialis data. It does not treat HSV encephalitis, eczema herpeticum, or eye involvement. Tea tree on the lip is irritation more than antiviral.

Primary plants

  1. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis)

    Melissa officinalis

Topical Melissa: small human cold-sore file. Not valacyclovir.

Typical. Cream at prodrome as labeled. Not an oral extract protocol for HSV.

Safety. Not ocular HSV. Not eczema herpeticum.

Supportive plants1
  • Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Sometimes used; irritation often exceeds benefit on the lip.

Typical. If used at all, highly diluted — and not instead of an antiviral.

    Safety. Burns, allergy. Never ingest.

When this is not enough

  • Eye involvement, eczema herpeticum, immunosuppression, first neonatal exposure questions
