Primary hyperhidrosis

Focal palmar/axillary sweating since adolescence is primary hyperhidrosis. Night sweats that soak the bed in a 55-year-old are TB/lymphoma/meds until you have thought about it. Sage leaf has traditional antisudorific use and some small night-sweat data; essential oil internally is a thujone object. This is not menopause unless it is menopause.

Primary plants

  1. Sage (Salvia officinalis)

    Salvia officinalis

Traditional antisudorific; some small night-sweat data borrowed to daytime focal sweating. Evidence modest.

Typical. Leaf tea. Essential oil internally is the wrong, thujone-containing object.

Safety. Pregnancy: culinary only. Thujone in oil. Overuse dries mucosa.

Supportive plants1
  • Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)

    Hamamelis virginiana

Topical astringent pads in the axilla as comfort, not a sweat-gland drug.

Typical. Distillate pad to intact skin.

    Safety. Irritation, alcohol sting.

Clinical notes

  • Soaking night sweats with fever or weight loss are not sage.

When this is not enough

  • Night sweats with B symptoms, thyrotoxicosis, pheochromocytoma-range spells, new SSRI sweating as the actual cause
