Chronic prostatitis / LUTS (adjunct)

Pelvic PT, alpha-blockers, and time. Fever and a boggy, exquisite prostate is acute bacterial disease — antibiotics, not berry extract. Saw palmetto lipid extract has conflicting LUTS data. Nettle root is the European LUTS traditional (not hay-fever leaf). Pygeum is older modest data.

Primary plants

    Serenoa repens

Lipid extract of the berry. LUTS evidence conflicting. Bleeding theoretical.

Typical. Lipidosterolic extract often 320 mg/day.

Safety. Does not shrink cancer. Bleeding/hormone theoretical. Delayed diagnosis if used instead of workup.

    Urtica dioica

Root (not leaf) is the European BPH traditional. Different part than hay-fever leaf.

Safety. Part identity: root vs leaf.

Supportive plants1
  • Pygeum (Prunus africana)
    PygeumHuman data
    Prunus africana

African prune bark; older LUTS trials, modest.

Typical. Bark extract ~100 mg/day as in older studies.

    Safety. GI. Sustainability/quality.

When this is not enough

  • Fever, toxic prostatitis, urinary retention, PSA/cancer workup not done, STI untreated
